The Clean Diet
There are truly many advantages living in a modern society. At present, all of the basic necessities in life,
from food to shelter, can be had very easily.
But we are paying a terrible price in the downgrading of our health. Our state of health is very much affected
by our modern fast paced lifestyle. We are not so much concerned about nutrition as we eat our food because we
think we have so many things to do. The easiest way is to grab the most convenient food to eat and go our busy way.
As it happens, our health suffers and we get sick. The culprit: the toxic substances that have accumulated in your
system through eating unhealthy foods and not having enough physical exercise.
If you find it hard to change your busy schedule, you can still get your health back by practicing the Clean
Diet Program. This is a 21-day detoxification diet designed by Dr. Alejandro Junger, a cardiologist in New York
City. With a busy, fast paced life as a doctor, Dr. Junger found himself suffering from chest pains. He knew, being
a cardiologist that his problem was not his heart but his depression. The normal drug prescriptions only led him to
more irritability and severe allergies. That’s when he decided to try alternative treatments which eventually led
him to develop this program.
He blended the good features of conventional medicine with the best features of alternative medicine and
called it “Open-minded medicine.” The program is now being used by people including famous celebrities to treat
chronic diseases like allergies, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, insomnia and weight gain. Based on
the proven principle that these diseases are caused by the accumulation of toxins in one’s body, the diet program
aims to flush out these toxins to restore the optimum functioning of all the organs of the body. The over all
result will be the restoration of health of the practitioner.
Unlike most detoxification programs which strictly limits food intake, the Clean
Diet allows you to eat whole grains, organic products, fish and poultry. This program is an
effective way of cleansing your system without any disruption in your regular work schedule. The program includes
the intake of supplements, but even without these supplements, you will still get substantial benefits. The program
takes about 3 weeks to complete. It aims to assist your digestion by having two liquid meals each day and a solid
meal in between. The diet will be generally non-allergenic and non-mucus forming which will release more energy in
your system. This diet will be more effective with the inclusion of exercises such as breathing and walking. Also
recommended is the daily intake of olive oil to help the liver – your main cleansing organ.
There are three general areas of concern in this diet program as
far as the restoration of your health is concerned. They are the following:
A. Toxin cleansing – this is achieved by abstaining from
processed foods and buying only organically grown food products, which is hoped to remove bad bacteria.
B. Restoration of nutrients – this is done through the
consumption of natural foods rich in nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and seeds; taking in of
vitamin and mineral supplements especially those that are lacking; exposure to sunlight for at least 15 minutes a
day to increase your vitamin D level.
C. Rejuvenation of you life – this is done through cleansing
practices like massage, saunas and skin brushing. You are also encouraged to meditate at least 5 minutes a day.
Bowel movement once a day is also practiced. If it will be difficult, a laxative should be taken to induce
elimination. Colon cleansing capsules or pills can also be taken to encourage bowel movement.
Here is an example of a Clean Diet in order to give you an idea of
what is typically involved:
• At 7 in the morning, drink one glass of water with fresh lemon juice
• At 8 a.m., drink one glass of herbal tea
• At 10 a.m., drink a blueberry and almond smoothie, or mango and coconut milk smoothie
• At 11:30 a.m., eat steamed salmon with steamed vegetable greens or chicken teriyaki
• At 1:30 p.m. drink coconut water (not coconut milk)
• At 4:00 p.m., eat sufficient amount of almonds or raw pumpkin seeds to satisfy your hunger.
• At 6:00 p.m., take a soup of consisting of watercress and miso, or a salad with ginger and carrot
Dr. Junger also suggests that you can eat your solid meal either during lunch or dinner. But you should only do
this occasionally for your detoxification to proceed efficiently. You are also advised to have a twelve-hour
interval between your last meal and your breakfast the next day to facilitate the detoxification and give your
digestive system enough rest.
